Note particularly the bracketed cornice, stone banding, Gothic-like details over some of the windows, and brick a number of houses provide any evidence of in has the appearance of a single famtel sinceence; con erletto to have been part of the HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain thetole omerstplcona in 1ooal or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Eben Wright, who built this apartment house, the Hotel Adelaide, also built the Hotel Kempsford at #72 Walnut Street. Wright lived in Nahant and rented units to a number of different people, including those who worked in Brookline and those who worked in Boston. Among teachers, and businessmen. John Koch of the American Screen Company (see form for 302 Washington Street) lived at the Hotel Kempsford, while Augustus Shurtleff, a well known Brookline physician, lived at the Adelaide.
In a letter to the American Architect and Building News of 1884, Obed F. Smith describes the room arrangement in the units: the parlor, dining-room, etc. were on one floor, and the chambers, and bedrooms on the floor above, with two floors connected by a private staircase. Smith indicates that his design may have been one of the earlier ones of this type to be conceived. 13-21 High Street/64 Walnut Street meet NR criteria C, being a very early, if not first, example of the duplex concept in apartmenthouse architecture and - criteria A, being an early example of the apartment hotel concept. which fully evolved in nearby Brookline Village, as seen in such examples as the Colonnade Hotel and 30-34 Station Street.
