Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) When this house was built in the early 1860's it sat approximately on the site it now occupies, facing Marion St., with a large barn behind it near Beacon St. A careful study of the town atlases another house was built at the same time, closer to Beacon St. The likely that #105 was moved in order to make room for it. In 1921, when the house was numbered 1437 Beacon St., it was again moved back to Marion Street, and in 1923 a block of stores was built on its last site on Beacon St. Austin W. Benton, who built the house, was an assessor for the town of Brookline, and Curtis, in History of Brookline, says of him,"Other citizens who played exceptional parts in putting forward the town's affairs included: ... Austin W. Benton, for many years a selectman..-" He also owned property on Vernon St.

The Benton family still owned this house as late as 1919. It is interesting to compare #105 to 71 Harvard Avenue, a house in the same style, with the same roofline and of the same size. Harvard Avenue house has dormers in the front, a single window with segmental arch in the pediment, more brackets, a bay window rather than a Palladian one, and a porch all the way across the front of the house. An outstanding feature of this house is the very graceful arched doorway and surround. 10.
