Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Arthur Bowditch designed a number of apartment houses and single family dwellings in Brookline between 1894 and 1925. Among his more notable apartments are: the Stoneholm (1514 Beacor St.), Pelham Hall (1278-1290 Beacon Sti), and the Golchester (1470 Beacon Street).. He also designed 1796-1812 Beacon, a series of attached houses. This serues of attached townhouses was built in 1896; its design shows the influence of the medieval revival and shingle styles.
Certain architectural elements found here can be seen in other houses designed by this architect. For example, the projecting diamond pane windows in the front facade can be found at #12 Maple St (1893); wide bargeboards with brackets are seen at 52 Salisbury Rd. (1907) and 128 Crafts Rd. (1903), while shingled gables are used in the design for 18 Maple St. (1894) and 52 Salisbury. Al1 of the above houses have shingled exteriors, as does 12-16 Corey Road. Other noteworthy features óf these townhouses are the trefoil designs in the dormers; leaded glass windows, and massive panel brick chimneys as well as steeply pitched gables found ón the front facade, aIl of which contribute to the medieval revival appearance. Alan Arthur and Gardiner Shaw built these houses as well as 1796-1812 Beacon St., built in 1898-99.
Arthur and Shaw were real estate agents, appraisers, and auctioneers who livec and worked in Boston. By 1897, they had sold #12 Corey Road to Ward Holloway of Holloway and Hemman, and in 1897, they sold #s 14 and 16 to Augustus Loring, an attorney who lived in Pride's Crossing. Loring owned other property in this area, including #27 Kilsytl Rd. #12 was owner-occupied, but #s 14 and 16 were rented to a lumber merchant and a whole- sale drug distributor, respectively. 12-16 Corey Road meets NR criteria A and C being a fine example of attached townhouses designed in the Medieval Revival/Shingle style and representing a suburban version of urban townhouses as well as a response to the need for housing on limited amounts of land after the arrival of the streetcar in Brookline. 10.
