ea c ol the (with nodifirations) sax Pigtscer, enis d leue example ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) Before 20th century alterations, this house was identical to #22 Stanton (now #5 Lincoln Road), located across the street. 1.75 Lincozn Road) Unfor- tunately, with the addition of a green house in 1973, a first floon bay window was removed, thus destroying a typical feature for the Italianate style. The proportions, double brackets, deep eaves, rounded windows, and heavy window cornices still remain, however, all characteristics of this style and all found in the designs of the other three Italianatehouses on this street. A particularly noteworthy feature at.#25 Stanton HISrOR chl SreMiflcwerrer il sho rola iners played an 1oc cont sta to that seen and how the building relates to the development of the community) Although it is impossible to determine the exact building date of this house, a study of a subdivision plan and tax. lists from the 1850g indicates that this house and #5 Lincoln were built during The first owner appears to have been Samuel Crafts who lived in a house (no longer standing) on Washington Street, near the intersection of Cynress Street. Crafts was one of the founders of the Harvard Congregational Society and sold of his land on Washington Street near School Street for the construction of the first Harvard Church (no longer standing). He inherited his property through his aunt, Susanna Sharp Croft, widow of Samuel Croft.
*** Crafts rented this house in 1852 to James Levin of Kelley and Levin, importers and wholesale dealers in fancy goods. By 1856, the house had been sold to Charles Bancroft of Buckley and Bancroft, a furniture concern in Boston. Boston businessmen appear to have built some of the early houses in this area: Robert S. Davis, a Boston publisher owned #50 Stanton Road in 1859-60, and James Edmond, a Boston merchant, built #44 Stanton in 1864-65. For more information on Bäncroft, see attached sheet. *** Crafts (or Craft) was born in Brookline in 1787, the son of Caleb and Sarah Sharp Craft. He resided in the family's house on Newton Street for many years, but eventually sold it to Thomas Woodward, and moved into a house on Washington Street, built in 1765 by Samuel Croft.
He later erected a new house on his estate (1837); Crafts was considerable property", most of which was inherited by his son, Samuel Craft, born in 1812. Samuel Craft (the father) died in 1856. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Examples of the Italianate style in Brookline include the common and self-contáined front gable arrangement whose form is closely related to the Greek Revival style; the box shaped house with hipped roof and in some cases, cupola; the rectangudar or squarish centered gable plan, in many respects similar to the simple hipped roof variety; and the asymmetrical (in almost all instances L-shaped) configuration which breaks out of the restraining square or rectangular house form and reflects, along with the Gothich Revival style, the influence of the Picturesque mode. 25 Stanton Road meets NR criteria C, being one of a group of Italianate houses in a concentrated area which, although modified, retains its asymmetrical (L-shaped), picturesque configuration as well as triple windowse deep bracketed eaves, and bracketed windowheads.
