Atlas Page 31/147/1 (Staple additional sheets here) * is particularly fine. The pedimented dormers are another feature - found in Mansards of the late 1860's and early 1870's ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) Number 44 Linden St. is an excellent example of a small, two-story Mansard of the 1870's, and possesses many unusual features. Aside from a sunporch on the left side, remodeled from a piazza, and changes ner 8301 in the tront and side entrances, it is almost entirely original.
The design of the roof, almost straight-sided with a sort of hip roof above, and the polygonal two-story bay are typical of Mansards built after the late 1860's, when the style became more animated and less classical, and the complicated design of the architrave, as well as the brownstone win- dow arches further animate the design, as does the many-patterned slate roof. The cornice and architrave, with bricks set in several patterns,* HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) See 29 Linden Place for development of the surrounding area. (Form 31-147-9; Map #39 The large central plot between Linden Place and Linden Street was the house lot of the Hon. Thomas Aspinwall Davis, upon which he built his house in the 1840's (#29, moved in 1903).
After Davis' death in 1845, the place had a number of owners - by 1865 Albert'M. Aldrich lived there. Tn 1868 Aldrich sold the house, stable and almost an acre of land to Seth K. Crowell, and the remainder of the lot, 24,000 sq. ft., to Solomon Faton of Roxbury. Eaton built two small houses on the parcel the next year, each valued at $500, which were rented by 1870 to men named Donoghue and Peck. In 1872 Eaton took down the two houses and began building this one - the tax list for that year lists an unfinished house valued at $5000 under Eaton's name. In 1874 #44 Linden St. was owned by Joseph F. Paul and Co. of Boston. Eaton lived on Fort Ave. in Roxbury and was a partner in Batchelder, Mann grocers, 210 State St. and 24 Commerce, and Paul owned J. F. Paul & Sons, Bay State Moulding Mills, Albany St., corner of Dover, and lived at 558 Tremont St.
in Boston; both men rented out this house. Eaton's connection with the area was probably through the Batchelder family - Charles W. Bat- chelder lived on Prospect St. nearby and sold provisions from a store on Washington St. near School St. By 1888 this house belonged to Clement K. Fay, a lawyer with an, office at 5 Tremont St. in Boston. He had grown up in his father's house. demolished. Hamison Fay was very active in town affairs, as vell astofince across the street, a Greek Revival house at #43 . of the founders of. St. Paul's Church in Brookline. Pais ceurch 44 Linden Street meets NR criteria C, being an excellent example of a small, two story mansard of the 1870s with intact detailing. Al though in close proximity to the remaining components of T. A.
