House set back appro: 15 feet from private way, 85 feet soutl of Stanton Road Atlas form- 39-199/12 (Staple additional sheets here) 44 Stanton Road meets NR criteria C, being a fine example of the Italianate style (centered gable type) which has retained such important detailing as double brackets under the deep eaves; bracketed windowheads; single story polygonal bay; and clapboard exterior. (The full height entry porch is an unusual and undoubtedly later feature. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This house is one of four Italianate houses built on Stanton (then Cypress Place) between 1849 and 1865. The porch is undoubtedly a later addition.
The pedimented gable over the front entrance is also seen at #50 Stanton Road, while double bracketing is a common feature to #s22 (5 Lincoln Road), 25, and 50 Stanton. Other similar features include the polygonal bays, deep eaves, and heavy window cornices, all typical characteristics for the Italianate style. Examples of the Italianate style in Brookline include the common and self-contained front gable arrangement whose form is closely related to the Greek Revival style; the box shaped house with hipped roof and, in some cases, cupola;* HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The last of four Italianate houses to be built. on this street, #44 Stanton Road was moved in 1901 to make way for a large complex of attached triple decker dwellings.
It was built in 1864-65 by dames Edmond, a commercial merchant who worked in Boston . It is interesting to note that most of the early residents of this area worked in Boston: Robert S. Davis, owner of #50) was a publisher, while James Levin, who rented # 25 Stanton Road in 1855, was an importer of "fancy goods" who worked on Kilby Street. Aubert Lamb Lincoin, a Boston attorney, owned this house by 1884: it was for this resident that nearby Lincoln Road was probably named. *the rectangular or squarish centered gable plan, in many respects similar to the simple hipped roof variety; and the asymmetrical (in almost all instances L-shaped) configuration which breaks out of the restrained square or rectangudar house form and reflects, along with the Gothic Revival style, the influence of the Picturesque mode.
