acreage Setting_ Set on small corner lot, across the street from very similar Italianate-style house, dating from same period (Staple additional sheets here) ** rectangular or squarish centered gable plan, in many respects similar to the hipped roof variety; and the asymmetrical (in almost all instances L-shaped) configuration which breaks out of the form and reflects, along with the Gothic Revival style, the influence of the Soente Ravivat atyie, the inttuones ot 3a00) Picturesquesmode. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) One of four Italianate houses on the street (see also #25,44 and 50), this house was identical to #25 until alterations were made to the latter during the 1970's.
O1der than #s 44 and 50, #5 Lincoln Road presents a number of typical characteristics for the Italianate style: note the deep eaves, double brackets, porch supports, rounded windows, and heavy cornices over first and second story windows. Many of these features can be seen the designs of the other houses.
Examples of the neavng cormiees over tare t ang de ne ofrer , Italianate style in Brookline include the common and self-contained front gable arrangement whose form is closely related to the Greek Revival style HISTORICAL L'STaNThPRANCEUxpait ai the Poledovners p owmers pfayea in local o state hysoory, the** and how the building relates to the development of the community) Although the exact construction date of this house can not be deter- mined, a study of a subdivision plan of 1849 and tax lists dating from the 1850s indicates that this house was probably built in 1852, the same date - indicated for #25 Stanton Road. The first owner appears to have been Samuel Crafts who inherited a large parcel of land from his aunt, Susanna Sharp Croft, widow of Samuel Croft.
Crafts, one of the founders of the HarwArd Congregational Society,*** the construction of the first Harvard Church (no longer standing). Crafts lived on Washington Street, near Cypress, and rented this house to E.S. Ritchie (see form for 112 Cypress Street) in 1855. By 1857, Ritchie had durchased the house. Ritchie built a magnetic observatory on Gorham Avenue (located near Lincoln Road), a "neat octagonal building, designed by T.P. Chandler, Jr., for the use of the Bureau of Navigation of the U.S. Navy. iron being employed, and is furnished by the Bureau, with the most delicate instruments known to science, for the adjustment and testing of compasses." He was also a manufacturer of other philosophical instru- ments. (see Marriet Woods, Historical Sketches of Brookline,P.
404) Lincoln Road was probably named for Albert Lamb Lincoln, a Boston attorney, who had purchased #44 Stanton Road by 1884.
