Setting This house is set close to the löt line on the right side, but has a widen side yand on the left, now used as a driveway. Boston South Quadrangle UTM Reference: 19/ 325430/4688880 Map #: 41 (Staple additional sheets here) 9 Linden Place meets NR criteria A,B,and C and is one of a small number of houses still standing which were once part of the original 1843 Linden Place residential subdivision. This house is an unusual combination of the Greek Revival/Italianate style and was built by one of the incorporators and benefactors of the Boston Theological Seminary (now Boston UnIversity).
Due to extensive later construction in the area, this house and other survivors of the Linden Place suvuivision are being nominated individually. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) Number 9 Linden St. is an unusual mansard house. It has a high curved slate roof with pedimented dormers, modillions under wide eaves, a distinctive Greek key motif on the frieze, and a string course and corner boards. double window at the first floor front has a single lintel over it, and the band of three narrow windows on the second floor is topped by three arches. In renovations made in 1980, a triple dormer window was put in over these, a thäte floor added to the rear ell, and the side porch was restored.
mansard roof was probably added in the late 1860's; a very similar house, built in 1852 and with a mansard roof added in 1869, can be seen at 20 Sacramento St. in Cambridge. atmnsard noor HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Linden Street and Place were laid out, with house lots, in 1843 by Thomas Aspinwall Davis, who bought up shares in the family land from his brothers and established one of the early developments in Brookline. Linden Fark, opposite this house, was held in common by the househohders surrounding it. (See inventory form for 29 Linden Place for more information on the devel- opment) . Isaac Rich bought a large lot at the corner of Linden and Harvard Streets and built this house sometime between 1844 and 1855.
Rich, who was born in Wellfleet in 1801, became involved in the shipping business with Edward Snow and owned a packet line which ran to New Orleans. He also establish- ed Isaac Rich & Co., dealers in cured, salted, and pickled fish at #35 Commercial St. The firm, in which Rich was a partner with a relative, Thomas A. Rich, who lived at 38 Babcock St., Edward S. Dane, and William Tho it ved at 38 Babcook 3t. H. West, prospered and exported dried fish to the West Indies and Europe. Rich became one of the wealthiest men of his time and left the greater part of his fortune to Boston University (then known as Boston Theological Sem- inary) of which he was one of the incorporators and a trustee from 1869 until his death. e r neven or Aratnra a He bought 29 acres of Aspinwall land on the hill of that name and gave it to B. U., which eventually developed the land and sold off house lots.
University Road is named for B. U. By 1871 this house belonged to Edward E. Floyd, of Floyd Bros & Co., a dry" guods concern at 93 Summer St. in Boston.
