The Thaddeus Jackson House originally probably consisted of two rooms separated by an entry with the kitchen in the leanto on the southerly end. Renovations have resulted in the complex remodeling of the rear portion (1941) of the house. The saltbox configuration, windows tucked under the eaves of the roof, 8/8 and 6/6 windows as well as the simple, center doorway all suggest an earlier construction date.
This somewhat retardataire style of the Thaddeus Jackson House emphasizes the rural, isolated character of* HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) The Thaddeus JacksonHouse was built in 1820 and as such, is one of a handful of houses built in Brookline before 1825 that are still standing. Bullt on land once belonging to Willlam lyng, this house replaced an earlier one that, according to legend, bore the marks of Indian tomahawks in its front door. This older house belonged to Abraham Jackson, a surveyor . of highways, a farmer, and a blacksmith. His blacksmith shop, which stood near his house, was undoubtedly busy since it was located on the way to Erosamond Drew's sawmill and "attracted much teaming from Newton and travel to and from Dedham," according to Harriet Woods.
Abraham Jackson left his property to his son, Thaddeus, who built this house for his son, Thaddeus, Jr. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Thaddeus Jackson House meets National Register criteria A and C and is a fine example of a vernacular Georgian country homestead. It is one of the few residences built in Brookline before 1825 that remains standing.
