Designed by J.
Williams Beal, a well known Boston architect of the period, Kilsyth Terrace, constructed of yellow brick and Roxbury stone, is one of a number of 32 story, brick, tur- reted, Chateau-inspired complexes found on Beacon Street and its nearby streets. See, for example,350-366 Tappan Street (Franeis Terrace), designed by Fehmer and Page in 1889. It would appear that Beal's designsfor these townhouses were influenced by Fehmer and Page's concepts. Note the turrets, brick corbelling, brick exterior, and arched entrances.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) In 1893, the local newspaper described Kilsyth Terrace as "a block of seven houses, cated 115 feet from Beacon Boulevard on the edge of the beautiful Aberdeen section." First Iloors consisted of a parlor, open hall and dining room, al1 with open fireplaces, as well as pantries and a kitchen with an ell. On the second floor, each front was divided into a large sitting room with a fireplace and a small chamber. A large chamber with bath was located in the rear and servants' quarters were situated in the ell. Finally, the third floor had one largeroom in the front "suitable for a chamber er billiards room", while the rear space was divided into two chambers.
"Broad terraces or open piazzas extend the entire length of the block, forming a unique Teature in this class of houses. Especial attention. has been paid to combining convenient arrangement and artistic effect." These houses were owner oceupied in some cases and rented out in others. Among those people residing there during the 1890's were: the Rev. Daniel Addison, pastor at All Saints' Church, located almost directly across Beacon Street (in #21); William Bradley, a commission mer- chant (in #15); K.N. Whitcomb of Whitcomb, Wead and Co.,a real estate firm; and the Rev. Albert Dunning (#19), an editor at Congregational House in Boston. 15-27 Kilsyth Road meets NR criteria A and C, being one of a few remaining "Terraces" in Brookline, i.e.
attached single family houses constructed to meet the increased demand for housing in this part of Brookline (near Beacon Street), after the arrival of the street- car in the late 1880s. Although the terraces were corstructed on far smaller lots, each house was designed with the amenities of comparable single family detached houses and with consideration of the need for open space and landscape features. Of particular distinction are the decortaive tiles of the sidewalk which extend the length of the attached buildings.
