Both structures sit atop a rise which is heavily landscaped and bordered by a high retaining wall, while steps and an overgrown path provide a pedestria approach to the main nouse from the street. 7. Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This is a hadsome house, well situated near the top of the slope of Asp- inwall Hill, with a commanding view of part of the town. The handling of its siting is deft - the house seems to grow naturally from the ground - and the curves of the stone walls echo those of the shingle walls and roof lines. It is a fine example of a house designed in the organie style of architecture popularized by H. H. Richardson and his successors, Shepley Rutan and Coolidge.
The architects, Chapman and Frazar, désigned a number of other large houses in Brookline,(see 149 Buckminster Road and 77 Warren St.,) many of them on Chestnut and Fisher Hills, as well as 49 Rawson Road nearby. This house is so good an interpretation of the Shingle Style, and so well adapted to its site, that it is difficult to believe that the same firm designed #49 only two years after this house, which is one of the most' successful Shingle Style desins in Brookline of the houses surveyed so far.
Elements of that style found here are the uniforn covering of shingles, the multi-gable roof, broad gable ends with eaves close to the wall, the roof sweeping down from the ridge to cover the porch, banded windows, the grace- ful curve of the roof line corresponding to that of the bay and the curving roof lines on the center and hip roofed dormers, the use of natural rather than cut stone, and the horizontal emphasis of the house. Thomas H. Shepard was a partner with his brother Otis in the Shepard & Morse Lumber Co. in Boston, which was founded by his father, Otis A. Shepard.(Se 216 Gardner Road for his house). The elder Shepard died in 1900 - prior to. that, Thomas worked for his father in the firm. He and his brother partici- pated in the development of family owned land on Verndale St. in North Brook- line. 10.
