It was built in the same year as # 26, but many of its features are typical of later houses built in this style.
The type of roof - mansard with almost a hip roof on top of it, the complex and animated treatment of the facade and details, and the various textures employed, are all elements found in later Mansards, and the use of textured surfaces and panels after 1868 in this style point toward the Queen Anne style, just as the brackets under the eaves in the Mansard houses here are not classical but are holdovers from the Italianate style used in these vernacular examples. The Reverend Orrock was editor of the Advent Herald, a religious newspaper with offices at 46 Kneeland St., Boston. He lived here for over thirty years. The Advent Herald was published weekly, on Wednesdays, by the American Millennial Association, and a year's subscription was $2.00. 68 Winchester Street meets NR criteria C, representing a rare example of a late, elaborat Mansard style cottage.
In 1984, the house was moved forward on its lot, and a seven- story high-rise apartment block (non-contributing) was constructed on the rear of the lot. 10.
