Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This house is especially noteworthy for its intricate detailing and decorative elements: cresting, crossbucks, dentils, brackets, paneled brick chimnéys, polygonal slates on roof over entry, elaborate porch.
The land on which the house was built originally belonged to Thomas and Augustus Aspinwall; it was divided by 1874 at which time the tax lists shows James Standish as the owner of the land.as wellaas a house and stable. James Standish is listed in the Brookline Directory of 1875 as a carpenter and builder. Sarah Standish, who appears on the tax list for 1875 as wner of this property, is listed as a non-resident after 1876, moving to Allston in 1877 and Boston in 1879.
local 54 Francis Street meets NR criteria C, representing a raré' example of a Stick Style house retaining such important detailing as the cresting on the front and- side bays as well as the tower; the polygonal, decorative slates on the roofs of the bays, front entrance, work; and brackets® and tower; tower finial; stick The original detailing of the barn/carriage house has also been preserved: cupola with finial, 2/2 windows, clapboard siding; and drip moldings over the windows and doors. 54 Francis Street also re- tails the original site arrangement of the property, with the barn/carriage house located behind the main house. 10.
