Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This house, with its well-kept yard and large barn, gives a very good idea of what Harvard Avenue must have looked like in the 1880's before more modern houses were built. At that time all of the buildings on the street were sub- stantial frame houses, most with barns or carriage houses, surrounded by wide lawns and set well back from the street. This house's excellent condition allows every fine detail of the trim to be seen - it is a very fine example of vernacular Italianate. William Tuckerman was a coppersmith with a shop at 80 Sudbury Street in Boston. He owned this house until 1869, when it was sold it to Edward I. Thomas, probably after Mr. Tuckerman's death. 63 Harvard Street meets NR criteria C, being a well preserved example of a high style Italianate house which also retains its original barn. 10.
