UTM reference: 19 301440 4678940 scale 1:25,000 Holliston Quadrangle (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the commmity.) The Joseph Cleale House is one of Sherborn's most stylish farmhouses, and exhibits both Federal and Greek Revival elements. The building's main block, facing west, features symmetrical, recessed entrance porches at the corners of its western gable end. Although this form is not unique to Sherborn, and in fact is common in southeastern Massachusetts, the Cleale House is the oldest house of this type in town. The main block rises 2 1/2 stortes to a steeply pitched gable.

This house is located on Western Avenue, a north-south thoroughfare that was laid out in the early 18th century. Originally known as "the way to the Sudbury River," it was briefly called "the road to the west" (1822-1825). Little is known about Joseph Cleale, a farmer, except that he built the house The house remained in the Cleale family into the 1930s. Today the two-acre lot is purely residential; an adjoining field is associated with the neighboring Eleazer Goulding House, 137 Western Avenue (#164). CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Joseph Cleale House is a well-preserved example of the Greek Revival style with some fine Gothic Revival elements.
In plan, the two-bay house with recessed entry porches and a long rear ell is typical of southeastern Massachusetts. The Cleale House retains integrity of location, design, settings, workmanship, and feeling, and fulfils Criterion C of the National Register. of Historic Places. The most unusual feature of the building is its front and side-wall window caps, consisting of large Gothicized fans that culminate in pointed arches. Windows are 12/12. The hip-roofed rear ell,extending to the east, may be contemporaneous to the main block. The ell at one time served as a carriage house but has been converted to residential use in this century. Projecting from its south wall is a late 19th century porch with turned posts, and abutting the ell's rear wall is diminutive, shingle-covered shed, an early 20th century addition.
