Built in the classic Greek Revival style and form, the Thomas Fleming House is three bays wide, 1½ stories tall, with a front-facing gable. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) This house was built in the 1850s for Thomas Fleming, one of four Fleming brothers engaged in the willow weaving business as a home industry in Sherborn. The house was built near a stream, providing the water needed to soften the osier shoots and make them pliable enough to weave. (The stream has since dried up at this site.) The Fleming brothers had learned their trade in England. They brought with them a special type of willow-"osier"-which grew best in a damp place and was suited to weaving. Their main products were baskets of all sizes, from small trinket boxes to large shipping hampers. Most of their trade was done locally. Willow weaving was one of a number of small-scale locál industries in Sherborn in the early to mid 19th century.
Most were centered along North Main Street, in the Edwards Plain - Dowse's Corner Historic District. Flemings' willow-weaving enterprise was one of the few located away from the town center. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Thomas Fleming House, a well-preserved Greek-Revival-style building, simply detailed and proportioned on a small scale, retains integrity of setting, design, location, materials, and workmanship, as well as associations with one of sherborn's mid 19th century household manufactories, willow weaving.
