acreage 2.00 acres Setting_Situated in the heart of west Sherborn's farm country, the house, its lot, and surrounding area retain pre-modern rural character. (Staple additional sheets here) 4679100 UTM Reference: 19301430 4379180 scale 1:25,000 Holliston Quadrangle ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the commmity.) This well-detailed, finely proprotioned residence reflects the talents of Sherborn's early 19th century master builder, Ebenezer Mann. The main facade of the 2½-story gable roof dwelling shows a good deal of simplicity and restraint. Its main entrance is much more understated than that of the Col. Sanger House Teneureetling shows athood (#147, Sherborn Center Historic District) which Mann built 6 years earlier on Washington Street.
Its front door is flanked by attenuated Doric pilasters antramed and contain bok fagntsd dentilated cornice.Its windows are simply ISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or stat listory and how the building relates to the development of the commmity. This house was built by Sherborn's master builder Ebenezer Mann for Eleazer Goulding, a farmer who served briefly as a selectman (1815) in 1825. Mann constructed residences of high quality from ca. 1805-1840. His most notable structures included the Col. Calvin Sanger House at 8 Washington Street (1819).
(While the Sanger House is an in-town residence of one of the town's most prominent citizens, the Goulding House is a farmhouse in the western hinterlands of town - and these distinctions are reflected in the surface treatments for these two dwellings.)
