acreage 3.45 acres Setting_ This building is situated in southwest Sherborn's farming/estate neighborhood known as Stannocks. The lot is exceptionally well maintained and features an herb garden adjacent to the main block. The Deacon William Leland House, which like many other late 17th and 18th century New England dwellings faces south, is composed of a 2½-story main block and single-story western ell. The simply adorned building is crowned with a gable roof, and a large central chimney is centered on the ridge.
The main five-bay facade features symmetrically placed narrow windows with 9/6 sash, simple vertical boards and a dentilated lintele oThe building's dark clapboards have been recently treated with a mixture of linseed oil and HISTORfOAZt'SGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in 1ocal or state history and how the building relates tothe developmentof the commmity.) Located in southern Sherborn on one of the community's earliest roadways, and far removed from the present town center, the Leland House reflects Sherborn's earliest development patterns of dispersed agricultural settlement. The house was built in 1717 for Deacon William Leland, a prominent citizen in early 18th century Sherborn and a son of Henry Leland, one of the area's first grantees.
Deacon Leland served as Town Clerk for five years and was representative of the General Court in 1735; in addition, he ran a prosperous farm. The property remained in the Leland family until the mid 19th century. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFCANCE (Cont'd) and penetrol as a wood preservative, and its trim is painted red. Unlike relatively little exterior alteration. It remains a fine example of the early Georgian style. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Deacon William Leland House is a well-preserved early Georgian dwelling, a rural example of the style that has sustained very little external change. Built by a prominent member of the community in the early 18th century, the house retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, feeling, and workmanship, as well as association with Sherborn's earliest development patterns--dispersed settlement near the Charles River. It represents the transition in Sherborn from First Period to early Georgian construction, and is one of a cluster of such buildings in the town that comprise a valuable document for study of early architectural practices.
