The building, which has been significantly enlarged since it was first constructed at the turn of the 18th century, was originally a single-pile half house with an end chimney. In the late 18th century, the building was greatly enlarged to its present center-entry, central chimney, five-bay mass. A rear ell was a still-later addition. The saltbox profile has been retained.
(Cont'd) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) Like a number of Sherborn's other First Period residences, the Danial Morse III House was built somewhat in isolation, but in close proximity to the Charles River. This house has significant historical associations with the Morse family. Daniel Morse Sr. was one of Sherborn's first English settlers. The land on which the building was constructed was part of the 800-acre grant purchased by Morse Sr.
in 1656, which extended from the Charles River to the foot of Meetinghouse Hill and was known from that time onward as "The Farm." Daniel Morse Sr.'s garrison house is believed to have been located near the present 177 Farm Road (on which now stands a mid 18th century house), to the north of 210 Farm Daniel Sr.'s grandson Daniel IIl built the core of the nominated structure ca. 1710. The house remained in the Morse family until the late 18th century: It may have been the Clark family, the building's subsequent owners, who enlarged BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES (name of publication, author, date and publisher) Anne C. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Cont'd) The entryway lacks pilasters but is crowned by a multipane transom and simple Georgian-style pediment. Fenestration is somewhat asymmetrical, with four bays flanking the entry on the ground floor, and three bays above (aligned with the outermost ground-floor windows and the entrance). The building's exterior has been sheathed with shingles.
