The Morse-Tay-Leland-Hawes House represents a vernacular expression of 18th century architectural forms. Composed of a 2 1/2-story main block and single-story rear wing, the building is four bays wide and is unusual for its asymmetrically placed fenestration, as well as its asymmetrical chimney placement.
the It is possible that building's southern side, now four bays wide and including a lean-to, may once have been the structure's original main facade constructed in the early 18th The building clearly was altered at some point in the 18th or early 19th The Morse-Tay-Leland-Hawes House was built circa 1700 by James Morse (born 1686), son of Capt. Joseph Morse, on land that his father drew in division of "common land" in western Sherborn. house with lean-to, may have grown to its present size through the adaption and addition of components of other structures later in the 18th century. In the 1770s, the house was purchased by Dr. Jonathan Tay, a physician who came to Sherborn from Salem and maintained an extensive practice in western Sherborn for the rest of the 18th century. Presumably, Dr.
Tay served citizens of nearby Holliston as well, since Western Avenue is located only a short distance from the town line. It is interesting to note that Brook Street, located to the north of this house, was long known as Dr. Tay's Lane. The building passed by marriage .to the Leland family in the late 19th century. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Cont'd) century and its earliest portion has been incorporated into the larger building as it appears today. New surface treatments reflective of current popular styles were added after the Revolutionary War. The present main facade of the building faces east. It features three closely set bays (one of which holds a fine late Georgian-style entryway) and a fourth bay at the building's northern end. The graceful door surround includes narrow Doric pilasters and a dentilated broken pediment crowning a large keystone-capped fanlight with Gothicized tracery. A dentilated cornice tops the 12/8 upper-story windows.
The building's southern facade, which incorporates a lean-to, also includes an entranceway. This facade is somewhat less elegant. Fenestration, again asymmetrical, is 6/6. Shallow pediments, a Federal-period addition, crown the windows. The doorway is simply enframed, surmounted by a multipane transom and unadorned pediment. The single-story rear addition, simple in form and devoid of ornamentation, was Tean-tly added in the mid to late 19th century. It extends behind the main block's CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Morse-Tay-Leland-Hawes House retains integrity of setting, design, materials, location, workmanship, and feeling. As a well-preserved, finely detailed example of an 18th century house displaying both Georgian and Federal detailing, the building fulfils Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places.
The building holds associations with Sherborn's early development and subsequent growth, thus fulfiling Criterion A. As a structure that is presumed to have undergone significant alterations in its first century of existence and that may hold information for scholars of early building practices, the Morse-Tay- Leland House also fulfils Criterion D of the National Register.
