One of several early 18th century Sherborn houses, with integral lean-tos that demonstrate the transition from First Period to Georgian styling, the Asa Sanger house retains an integrity of form, if not fabric. Its clapboards are presently covered with wood shingles. The present entry surround, incorporating 3/4 sidelights and a narrow entablature, is a ca. 1960 alteration.
Previously, the doorway had been crowned by a five-pane transom and framed by engaged pilasters and a somewhat broader entablature. The exterior otherwise appears HISTORG&AE SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity. Al though an exact construction date has not been established for the Asa Sanger House, visual analysis suggests that it was built in the early decades of the 18th century. The property's early owner was Elisha Bullen. an example of a transitional house type, from massive First Period construction to less weighty, symmetrical Georgian styling.
By the time of the Revolution the house's owner was Asa Sanger, a farmer who, a 19th century history recounts, was "putting on a roof when (he) heard cannon fire and left hammer, nalls and shingles, and headed for Concord." The building was probably receiving a new roof at this time. The Sangers were a prominent family in 18th and 19th century Sherborn, involved in farming, tavern and shop keeping, the law, and, by the 19th century, factory ownership. The building remained essentially intact until the 1960s, when its clapboards were shingled and a Greek Revival-style entryway replaced the Georgian transom- crowned doorway. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (cont'd) to be intact. Its highly symmetrical five-bay main facade features simply enframed 9/6 windows. A massive brick chimney projects from the center of the roof's ridge line. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Asa Sanger House retains integrity of location, design, setting, and feeling, as well as associations with a prominent Sherborn family. It is a fine example of the transition from First Period to Georgian-style dwelling, retaining the massive form, central chimney, and integral lean-to of the early dwelling yet the symmetry and the later style.
The building thus fulfils Criteria C and A of the National Register of Historic Places. Staple to Inventory form at bottom NpSForm 10.900-a .
