The Richard Sanger III House is the only house of its type--a gambrel-roofed old building with lean-to--in Sherborn. A large shed-roof lean-to was added to the building's main block, a 2½-story gambrel-roof structure built according to local tradition ca. 1734, in 1775.

(Cont') HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) Richard Sanger III bought this house's land in 1734 from heirs of John Hull, mintmaster of the colony. The house was probably built shortly after the property's purchase. The Sangers were a prominent local family. Richard Sanger III's father and uncle arrived in Sherborn in 1689 and established a successful blacksmithing business.. Sanger III inherited a sizable fortune from his father in 1731, which he enlarged through trade and real estate speculation in Boston and Maine, as well as Sherborn. He was one of only a handful of town residents who owned slaves in the 18th century.

In addition to this house, Sanger also built a tavern (no longer extant) closer to the town center, but on the same road, the stage route between Boston and Hartford (now Route 16). ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Cont's) The main block's five-bay main facade features narrow, simply enframed 9/6 sash windows symmetrically placed.

Narrow 3/4 sidelights flank the slightly off- center front doorway, which is surmounted by a triangular pediment. A large ell to the east of the main block was added in the 1960s. It is sympathetic in style to the 18th century original building and is set at a 45° angle to the main block and, together with a garage, shed, and barn (all also constructed within the past 30 years) forms a small courtyard to the rear of the house. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION The Richard Sanger III House retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, and associations with Sherborn's 18th century patterns of dispersed settlement. The building is an architecturally rare form for Sherborn, in a fine state of preservation, and is significant as an important document for the study of building techniques and practices in a peripheral area of settlement.

Holding associations with a locally significant family, the Sangers, the building thus fulfilis Criteria C,A, D, and B of the National Register of Historic Places.
