Ware's Tavern is a large, simple structure that was built in two phases and that displays both Federal and Greek Revival detailing. The oldest portion of the Tavern, which faces south, was built ca. 1780 and rests on a granite block foundation. It is two stories high, five bays wide, with a central entrance and large brick chimney above. Windows are 6/6, simply enframed, and symmetrically aligned.
South Main Street, the road to Holliston in the 18th century, runs past ECentestern side of the building. The tavern essentially doubled in size ca. 1840, IISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or stat listory and how the building relates to the development of the commmity. The area around the intersection of Goulding and South Main Streets in South Sherborn has historical associations with Sherborn's Ware family. As early as 1710, Capt. Joseph Ware had a grist mill on Sewell's Brook, near Goulding Street. He bought the Sewell-Ware House (100 South Main Street, F136) 1n 1/34. His grandson, Benjamin Ware, built the oldest portion of 113 South Main Street -ca. 1780 as a residence for himself and his wife, Mehitable Leland, whom he married in 1778. Their son, Eleazer, had established a tavern in this residence by the early 19th century.
The building had a ballroom on its second floor. By the 1830s, Ware's Tavern, also known as a halfway house, was one of at least three places of lodging in town. Others were the Tucker Tavern on Prospect Street near Framingham (built ca. 1780, the building received extensive Colonial Revival alterations in the early 20th century and no longer retains integrity) and the Paul Tavern (al-so built ca. 1780, this structure was serving as a todging place in the center of town by the 1820s; it is part of the Edward's Plain-Dowse's Corner Historic District). Sherborn's growing local light industries and its location between the industrial town of Framingham and points south meant that South Main Street, a main thoroughfareby the early 19th century, was well traveled.

The gable roof of the original structure may have been raised and a pedimented attic added at this time.
The tavern's entryway consists of tapered, engaged Doric pilasters surmounted by a broad entablature with a single small medallion and a dentilated cornice. It is a Colonial Revival-style addition, made in the early part of this century. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Cont'd) chrough Sherborn. While the first Meeting House was being built in 1830, the Ware'sTavern ballroom served as the town's place of assembly. The Ware family sold the tavern to Brayton Bullard Sr. in 1830. At some point in the mid 19th century an ell of the tavern was sold and moved across the street to the north to 109 South Main Street. By 1889 John Jackson owned the property and it no longer took in lodgers. Jackson and several of his neighbors raked and sold the cranberries that grew in nearby bogs.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION Ware's Tavern retains integrity of design, location, materials, workmanship, and feeling, as well as association with Sherborn's early-mid 19th century development as a growing community of household manufactories and light industry-and thus as a community increasingly linked to external society. A well preserved example of the transition from Federal to Greek Revival styling, Ware's. Tavern fulfils Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
