Woodland Farm's earliest portion was built by one of Sherborn's first European settlers, Hopestill Leland. The house remained in the Leland Family through the 19th century.
The series of additions that the building sustained in the 18th and 19th century reflects Sherborn's development patterns. The original modest structure was located along one of Sherborn's first roadways. Sherborn in the mid 18th century was a growing agricultural community, and the expansion of the early saltbox to a larger well-detailed Federal-style building by a prominent Sherborn family is indicative of the Lelands' prosperity and changing tastes. Likewise, the Greek Revival-style additions of the 1820s, Sherborn's heyday, represent a period when the town was thriving economically and when the greatest number.of houses--many in the popular Greek Revival style--were erected. Report on Woodland Farm by Maximillian Ferro, November.8, 1976, underthe auspices ofthe Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. 10M - 7/82 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Woodland Farm today represents several differing types, periods, detailing, and methods of construction. Structural analysis of the building has suggested that it may have evolved from a ca. 1705 half house--a one-room-plan structure, two stories high with an end chimney--to its present form, a five-bay, Georgian- style building. The large brick chimney, located forward of the ridge and at the center of the structure, is indicative of such a change. The building was first enlarged ca. 1715, at which time a rear lean-to may have been added. The house was reframed to its present width ca.
1760, and it was in the mid 18th century that 8/12 sash windows, simply enframed, were installed. The building's east wing was added ca. 1820 and the western ell was constructed ca. 1950. Other modifications include full-length sidelights flanking the front doorway (probably added ca. 1820); Italianate-style brackets (ca. 1860) edging the gable ends eaves; a door surround composed of incised pilasters supporting a triangular dentilated pediment (a late 19th/early 20th century addition); and shingle covering the original clapboards (mid 20th century). Noteworthy interior features include the east parlor's chamfered frame, with 45-degree triangular lamb's tongues, and the west parlor's chamfered summer beam. Woodland Farm's setting remains a rural one; a fieldstone wall edges the property and older trees surround the house.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION Woodland Farm retains integrity of setting, location, materials, and association with Sherborn's first period of European settlement. A very early Sherborn residence whose frame and present appearance illustrate the accretion of the Leland family's changing tastes as well as several types, styles, and methods of construction, Woodland Farm fulfils Criterion C of the National Register. The archaeological potential in the area is also high, both for the present house's foundations and for possible remains of previous structures on the property. As a Federal-period farmhouse retaining evidence of as many as four phases of alteration, the building reveals information on architectural practices in a rural community and thus meets Criterion D of the National kegister as well.
Although the total acreage currently associated with this property is quite large (approximately 20 acres), only the area immediately surrounding the house and the outbuildings is being nominated.
