Description of the property

mid-point of the downtown commercial corridor, Broadway. Its Neoclassical design is evidenced by the building's symmetry and regularity, and architectural detail. building's height and rich ornamentation give it prominence over other commercial possesses a significant amount of its original design elements. In 1918, the original building was constructed as a one-story detached building. in coursed glazed terra cotta brick. Architectural details included decorative hood ornamentation over the main entrance and carved cornice trim in a classical design. A pediment enhanced the building. In 1924, a major alteration occured leading the building to achieve prominence it is this major addition that offers the highest degree of quality architectural of the building facade is tan-colored coursed brick. The building's fenestration is symmetrical.

The front facade demonstrates five bays, highlighted by a richly bears the inscription "Liberty - Truth - Justice - Equality" -- the motto of the Fraternal Order of Eagles: (F.O.E.). Decorative carved medallions are evidenced on the building exterior comprised of: rosettes on shields, and the F.O.E. insignia. building caused the exterior on the north side of the building to be partially blocked. In addition to two retail stores, the interior included various rooms for lodge and public activities. Architect Architect - Paul A. Rissmann Builder - T.J. Hume Statement of Significance (in one paragraph) The Eagles Building served as the home of the Lorain Eagles Lodge, Aerie 343 since 1918. It is a rare survivor of the 1924 Tornado which destroyed or seriously damaged complete and remained largely unscathed by the damaging tornado. Lorain architect, designed the Antlers Hotel in downtown Lorain and also The Seher Home; Mr. Rissmann designed several buildings for social and fraternal organizations, the Eagles is testimony to the "beautiful club houses" located around the country of which the national Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.) boasted. ten-story building complete with lodge facilities and several floors of leased office space.
