Closer to Har- vard Square, the Avenue is anchor (Staple additional sbeetsYera) notable early 20th cen tury apartment houses, including the Bav State Dunvegar Montrose and the Harvard. RCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmmity.) The Dunvegan is a six story yellow-grey brick building that effec- tively wraps around its corner lot. Italian Renaissance details include rusticatéd first two stories, a copper cornice with modillions, differen- tiated window treatments on each story and belt courses.
The center entrance is recessed behind a limestone arch. As such, the Dunvegan is significant under Criterion C. ISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) . The Dunvegan, along with its neighbor, the Montrose, were the first luxury, French flat apartment houses constructed in Cambridge. Origi- nally, the buildings had two units to a floor. .each.with ten.rooms.- The Dunvegan had two-room, "bachelor" apartments also. After the turn of the century, Massachusetts Avenue's large homesteads increasingly gave way to apartment buildings and.then commercial development, the trolley brought in a different class of residents. For its impor- tance in understanding this process of transformation along Mass. Ave., the Dunvegan is significant under Criterion A.
