Architectural Significance See Bertram Hall form for further discussion of architectural significance. Eliot Hall is identical to Bertram Hall in mass, material, fenes- tration and style. However, details have been simplified. The cornice is plane and the number of chimneys has been reduced to one. The Quad- rangle entrance is surmounted by a simple keystone lintel while the Shepard Street entrance maintains its porch and balustrade with added Though somewhat economized in detail, Eliot Hall is significant under Criterion C as embodying the distinguishing characteristics of the Colonial Revival style. Longfellow, Jr., Eliot Hall, Bertram Hall's twin, was the second Radcliffe dormitory to be built on the Rad- cliffe Quadrangle and began the tradition of arranging the dormitories around the Quadrangle in pairs; with Bertram Hall it forms the south side of the Quadrangle. Its simplified details reflect rising material and building costs. Bertram and Eliot Halls were found to be significant under themes of architecture and education, as proposed by Dr. Cynthia Zaitzewsky to the Review Committee for the Study of Architecture of Harvard University and Its Environs in Cambridge.
