Architectural Significance The Fogg Art Museum meets Criterion C as, according to Bunting, the best example of a Harvard building embodying the learned ecleticism that characterized American architecture of the first quarter of the twentieth century. Notable features include wooden balcony consoles and pilastered window frames derived from the Old State House in Boston and a main entrance is derived from Westover, the Byrd Mansion in Virginia. The high quality of ornamentation is typical of the buildings the Coolidge firm designed for Harvard in the 1920's, before economic conditions re- stricted efforts to recreate Georgian forms. Contrasting with the Georgian exterior, but in keeping with its historical accuracy, the Fogg's interior is dominated by a top-lit en- closed courtyard. Executed in travertine, it is a 4/5 scale replica of the San Gallo loggia at Montepulciano.
Completing the setting for the study of art and architecture are a French sixteenth century carved oak ceiling bought for the two-story Warburg Hall, the largest exhibition space in the museum, and seventeenth century English woodwork reassembled for the Naumberg Rooms, an ell attached to the northeast corner of the buildings in 1931 to display the Naumberg collection of seventeenth century paintings. It is no coincidence that the Fogg Museum, designed by the Coolidge firm, became a major element in the "Study for the Future Grouping of Buildings" - begun in 1922 by Coolidge & Shattuck and carried out by the successor firm of Coolidge, Shepley, Bulfinch & Abbott. Set across Quincy Street from the Yard, the sizable mass of the Fogg Museum successfully completes the Sever Quadrangle without dwarfing Emerson and Robinson Halls.
Historical Significance The Fogg Art Museum was built with funds raised by the campaign of 1925. It expanded the original Fogg Art Museum, Hunt Hall (William Morris Hunt, 1893), which was built with the bequest of Elizabeth Fogg. A neo-classical building, the style of the original Fogg disregarded that of its neighbors and was considered unfunctional from the start. The new Fogg's attempt to combine galleries, storage, offices, classrooms, a library and a public lecture hall, although not totally successful, clearly places it in the company of earlier teaching museums at Harvard like the University Museum, a tradition continued with the addition of the Sackler Museum (James Stirling, 1981). The Fogg Museum meets Criterion B for its associations with the history of fine arts instruction at Harvard.
