TO the west are several apartment building ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmmity.) The Jarvis is a red brick Queen Anne apartment house with polychromatic trim. Orange brick corner guoins and window surrounds contrast with the rusticated ground level, belt courses and window ledges. The asymmetri- cally olaced arched entrance with large wooden doors is flanked by pilasters and follows Richardsonian precedents. Queen Anne details include a pro- Jecting gable over the entrance, corbelled brick at the cornice ana mas- ive end chimnevs.

JH:* The Jarvis was the first apartment house constructed in the area surrounding the northern half of Massachusetts Avenue. This area had contained primarily large estates until 1860 when a building boom began. Unlike other parts of Cambridge, lots were available for new development. Although constructed on a street of single family homes, as were most apartment buildings, the Jarvis fits in better than most because of its domestic appearance. Indeed, the Jarvis was organized much like a large single family house with rooms for the servant on the top floor, storage rooms in the basement, and suites of five to ten rooms.
The site plan, published in American Architect & Building News in 1891,: tennis court in the rear. The feasibility of such a luxurious apartment building was apparently fleeting as no imitators were constructed lo- cally. French flat apartment buildings like the Montrose and the Dunvegan developed later along Mass. Ave and provided a much more economic use of space. Richards were a father/son team, the younger studying both under his father and in the office of Peabody & Stearns. In 1880, he joined his father's office and continued to work there after his father's death in 1900. Together, the Richards designed many Queen Anne buildings in Cambridge including such other significant multi- family structures as 19 Ware Street (1887) and 382-392 Harvard Street (1889). Of these three, the Jarvis is the most elaborate and is sig- nificant under Criterion C as embodying the distinguishable characteristic of the Queen Anne style.
