Architectural Significance The Stickney-Shepard House at I1-13 Remington Street is a double Greek Revival cottage with large rear ell.
Greek Revival details include heavy cornice and end pilasters and a full front porch with two plain columns on pedestals at the corners and two fluted Doric columns in the middle. The four front windows contain 9/9 sash. There are two dormers in the roof and a central chimney. The side entrances have canopies with 1870's style brackets. One of the smallest double Greek Revival houses in Cambridge, I1-13 Remington Street is significant under Criterion C as strongly representative of this style in the survey area. Historical Significance Between 1830 and 1854, Dana Hill became the most important new residential area in Cambridge. Modest houses and mansions were built predominantly in the Greek Revival style. Variations were made on a few basic types: side hall, gable-front, and the double house. The Stickney-Shepard House is representative of this latter type.
Remington Street was originally part of the Dana estate which was sold off between 1819 and 1854. All the lots were sold off with deed restrictions that helped to maintain the residential character of the neighborhood so close to Massachusetts Avenue. The builders, N.U. Stickney and S.P. Shepard, who bought the lot from the Dana family in 1846, were also the builders of Holden Chapel in Harvard Yard.
