Thoughtfully designed for the site, 6 Garden Terrace is built into a hillside with the entrance at the brick basement level and living quarters on the principal floor opening onto a broad rear terrace. Above the bedroom floor is a studio with a large northern window in a shingled An imaginative design, the Langord Warren House's steep roof and rominent gables recall the Medleval style, while its ornament, 1imitec to the entrance, recalls the Renaissance.
The entrance frame includes sidelights and a projecting hood supported by columns. Above is a triple casement window with pediment. The windows are of more or less unliorn IISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state Continued history and how the building relates to the development of the commmity.) In terms of antecedents, 6 Garden Terrace derives from the turn-of- the-century work in England by designers like C.F.A. Voysey. This British style had spread to the United States by the late nineties, and the first representative in Cambridge was built in 1903. While the movement rejected the picturesque charm, ornament and dependence on historical precedence of the Queen Anne, it continued its tradition of scale, interior planning, good materials and sound craftsmanship. Langford Warren was the organizer and first head of the Harvard .
Department of Architecture. In addition to the home that he built for himself, Warren adapted German Bestermeyer's plans for the Busch-Reisinger Museum, 1914. 6 Garden Terrace is significant under Criterion A for its importance in understanding the shift in the twentieth century towards a rational approach to architecture while maintaining the high standards of craftsmanship of the late nineteenth century. At certain locations, like the stairwell and above the entrance, they are grouped more interior light. The simple white wooden window frames 20 orovide belt course set against the flat stucco wall surface emphasize the clear geometric composition of the building. The Langford Warren House is Baitionothe bul ding. one of the earliest and best examples of what Bainbridge Bunting refers to in Report Four: Old Cambridge as the Neo-Rational style. This style has two distinct forms: one, blocky, static and rather upright, capped by a hip roof, the other, lighter and more geometrically complica- ted, capped by a steep-pitch gabled roof, as on the Langford Warren House. While both forms utilized brick, clapboard and shingles as building ma- stucco also became popular.
Other examples of this style are 33 Reservoir Street (1909, Allen Jackson), 43 Reservoir Street 1913, Hartley Dennett) and 15 Hubbard Park (1914, Newhall and Blevins). The Langford Warren House is significant under Criterion C for the reasons stated above.
