ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the commmity.) The S.B. Withey House is a late Greek Revival House with an extended Three stories in height, the house has lighter proportions than earlier Greek Revival houses. cornice and corner boards are relatively narrow and the street front gable is not a full pediment. The recessed ioorway has traditional sidelights, but the door has octaconal panels and the antablature above the door is cut in a "Tudor" arch.
- Other traditional Greek Revival details include 6/6 fenestration. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explaenest rote onmers played in Iotth or House meets Criterion history and how the building relates to the development of the conmmity.) Continued Appian Way was laid out in 1810. The S.B. Withey House is the only house still on its original site and one of the few remaining houses that gives any idea of the early residential character of lower Brattle Street. Other eariy houses nearby include the Dexter Pratt House (1808) at ,54 Brattle Street and the Buckingham and Pratt Houses at the edge of Radcliff Yard. The S.B. Withey House meets Criterion A for its associations with the development of vernacular housing on lower Brattle Street.
