Date 5/83: rev. by H.White 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Amos Adams House is an outstanding and well-preserved example of the domestic Queen Anne style in Newton and therefore meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
The Adams House is characterized by its overall asymmetry and the complexity and variety of its form and ornament. The house 1s basically a rectangular box with a steeply-pitched hip rooi. There are several porches and balconies oi varied size and placement. The soaring panelled chimneys are yet another typical feature. Ihe focal point of the design is a low octagonal corner tower. Decorative detail includes abundant applied wooden ornament and wall surfaces clad in patterned shingles. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Amos Adams House was built on land belonging to the former Brackett estate, which extended beyond both sides of Park Avenue. Albert Brackett and his sons operated the oldest and largest coal and wood yards in Newton.
Yielding to the increasing pressures of suburban development, Brackett began selling off pórtions of his estate at the close of the nineteenth century. Amos Adams, an occupant of this house was a Boston Commission merchant, and typical of the commuters who made their homes in Newton during the latter part of the nineteenth century.
