White 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Brackett House is one of several fine examples of the temple front type of Greek Revival in Newton Corner and therefore meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Brackett House is an elaborate Greek Revival style residence with a temple front. The temple front was used less often in Newton Corner than a local variation of the style which places both the pediment and entrance at the building's side and a row of four monumental columns across the front.
The Brackett House is a 25- story residence sited with its gable end and monumental Ionic portico facing the street. A north wing was attached to the main block of the house ca. 1900. Its current detailing represents a mixture of the Greek Revival and Colonial Revival styles. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This large lot at the corner of Bellevue and Centre Streets is said to have a history dating back to the early settlement of Newton corner. It may have originally been part of the nearby 43 acre farm of Deacon Samuel Hyde. Hyde was one of Newton's first few original white settlers. He arrived in this country from Iondon in 1639. With his brother, who owned adjoining land, in 1667 he laid out a road through his acreage which later became known as Centre Street.
The street remains one of Newton's major north-south thoroughfares. During the second half of the nineteenth century the house was resided in by Gilman Brackett, a provisioner who also owned several lots of land on adjacent Bellevue Street. Shortly before the first World War the house came into the possession of the Burton family. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Atlases-1917, 1907, 1895, 1886, 1874. City Directories- 1905, 1868. O.H.
