Date5/81; rev. by H. white 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Frederick Collins residence is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a temple-front type of Greek Revival house, one of several in Newton, although Waban's single examples it therefore meets criterion o of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Frederick Collins house is sited with its gable end to the street. A two-story Ionic portico across the facade and the placement of the entrances on both of the lateral sides are a local variation of the style.
The typanum and facade are flush-boarded in an attempt to similar the ashlar masonry of the Greek temple prototype. The side entrances are set within one-story Ionic porches which are centered on the five-bay east and west elevations. Other characteristic features include the full-length first-story windows on the facade, the panelled corner pilasters and the shaped window lintels. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. and inherited a portion of his father's vast 100-acre estate which réached local acreage in 1779. The area remained largely undeveloped until the latter years of the nineteenth century. Frederick Collins and his brother Edward owned a glue factory which once stood south of the Beacon Street residence.
Collins was active in local affairs, and was a member of the City Council. During the late nineteenth century this section of Beacon Street came to be known as the "Collins neighborhood" for the row of Collins houses which stood here.
