Date5/15/83, rev: 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Dupee Estate meets Criteria Cas a work by the noted architectural firm of Peabody & Stearns, and an unusual example of the quasi-Medieval mode of the Queen Anne movement as adapted for a domestic, rather than monumental institutional building. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
The Dupee Estate is an unusual example of the quasi-Medieval manner of the Queen Anne movement influenced by John Ruskin. This mode of the : Queen Anne style was generally reserved for monumental buildings of masonry construction. However, several domestic examples exist in the Boston environs, including Cambridge and this house in Newton. Queen Anne characteristics are the irregular mass and broken roofline. Ruskinian Gothic overtones are suggested by the blunt pointed arches and masonry of brick and stone. Few masonry houses of this period exist in Newton. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The land on which the Dupee Estate stands was owned throughout most of the 19th c. by the Woodman family.

The house was later owned by Mary Baker Eddy, and is currently in the possession of the Christian Science Church which she founded.
