Date December 1977 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The academic design employed here makes this one of the most important Mansard-style houses in Newton. The house thus meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Place. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
This 2-1/2-story Mansard house is a surprisingly elaborate example of the style in a neighborhood of simple vernacular Queen Anne houses and bungalows. Although many Mansard-period designs borrowed from clasical architecture, classical motifs are rarely used as widely as in this example, particularly with wood-frame construction. The building's overall form is boxy and self-contained, a feature of classical architecture, and the placement of its components symmetrical. strictly The facade is broken by a shallow center pavilion, capped with a low Mansard roof, emphasized from doorway to roofline by variation in trim. Entablature and pediments appear in window openings, and the eaves are decorated with brackets and dentil coursing.
with bracketa and dent HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The house, located on an extensive landscaped lot, was evidently built for Charles D. Elliott, who, with David C. Sanger, operated a coal and lumber yard in West Newton. The yards were advertised as Elliott & Waters and noted that they had a steam mill on the site which could cut lumber to order. They furnished many building essentials from lumber to gutters, moldings, and hair for plaster. During the 1870s Elliott and Sanger also developed most of Henshaw Street and Oak Avenue. The house originally had a Waltham Street address and was reached by a long circular drive. It had several outbuildings including (in 1874) a windmill.
Elliott left West Newton before 1879, and in the following decade the grounds of his estate were divided to form Eliot Avenue and surrounding streets. Between 1890 and 1902 the house served as the Children's Home, an orphanage, with Alice Williston as matron. By 1907 it was owned by the Salvation Army of Massachusetts. Most plastic in character is the front porch, which is treated with arched valencing, openwork panels, and clustered posts. The porch supports comprise the most unusual detail of this elaborate residence, exhibiting banded blocks derived from a 16th-century "French" architectural order. Devised by Philibert Delorme, the order emphasized the column blocks of stone with bands of design elements. The arcade of the Tuilleries Palace in Paris used this order, and its publication probably influenced the builder of this house.
