Date 12/1/79 Rev. by H.White 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Rufus Estabrook house is notable as one of the earliest suburban residences built in Auburndale after subdivision and development were initiated in 1847 by the North Auburn Dale Iand Company.
It is also an excellent and well-preserved example of the Greek Revival sidehall type of suburban house, and therefore meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This well-preserved Greek Revival sidehall dwelling retains a number of characteristics of the style including the full-width one-story Ionic portico, entrance offset to the left with transom ana sidelignts, wide corner pilasters, pedimented dormers and six-over-six windows. The house's most distinctive feature is the unusual openwork in the porch frieze. City atlases indiciate that a barn stood on ethe site of the present garage. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
