As a rare as for its associations with one of Newton's founding families, the Fuller House and Barn meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This house is thought to have been built about 1775. Mr. Arthur Dewing reports earlier beams in the cellar which probably came from an older house. This house was originally 1-1/2-stories high. The roof has been altered to accomodate its present 2-1/2 stories. The front door surround, thought to date from 1780, has a cornice supported on unusual brackets with capitals and battered pilasters. The house may once have had a central farm's barn was converted to a residence in 1950.
The l-1/2-story structure was originally a side-entry "English" type barn, typical of pre-1830 farm buildings and is thought to have been constructed about 1800. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Fuller family resided in Newton since 1644, when John Fuller (1611-1698) settled the original part of the "Fuller Farm." He eventually acquired 1000 acres of farmland and built a house somewhat to the north and east of the present house. Fuller's son Joseph (1652-1740) built a house near Smelt Brook at what laterbecame the Claflin estate, and it was John Fuller's grandson (Joseph's son), Capt. Jonathan Fuller (1686-1764), who inherited the original farmstead. Jonathan in turn passed it down to his son, Capt. Edward Fuller (1735-1810).
Edward married Ruth Jackson in 1759 and built part of the present structure probably about 1775. An investigation of the basement of the present house by Mr. Arthur Dewing , in 1952 suggested that beams from the original house may have been reused in the construction of the present structure. Capt. Edward, like his predecessors, held various positions of authority in the town. He is reported as surveyor of highways in 1763, tithingman in 1769, warden in 1776, and other posts. He served on several committees and assisted in the construction of the Waltham Bridge in 1762. He served in the Revolution in New York in 1777. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Priscilla R. Still in the basement of the structure are heavy beams as well as large foundation stones similar to those in use in the main house. The clapboarded structure still retains a late 19th-century cupola and weathervane, though the fenestration of the structure has been altered to suit its present use and new end chimney added to the west end of the building. Edward's son Ezra Fuller (1769-1854) inherited the farm from his father and was probably responsible for raising the roof to its present height in the 1830s or '40s. Ezra, in turn, deeded the property to Cordelia Fuller, widow of Josiah. Her son, William E. Fuller (1841-1890), superintendent of streets, appears to have been the last Fuller to own property.
