Date 5/83: rev. 3/86 by H.White NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The John Harbach House is a rare surviving example of the Federal style in Newton Centre, and one of three remaining Federal period houses along Ward Street associated with the Ward Family, early area inhabitants. The house therefore meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Other Federal features include the corner pilasters and the window mouldings of mitred wood strips. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The John Harbach house is one of three Federal period houses on Ward Street, all of which pre-date 1835. The first Harbac! to arrive in Newton was Thomas (b.1698). He came to Newton from Alcester, England. In 1723. Thomas' son John (b. 1730) married Mary Durant of Newton. grandson,_John Harbach (1803-1857) sold provisions in Newton and Brookline. Jom (280)-357, aod Their His son, John Wilson Harbach (1838-1886) later owned the house and some adjacent land. In 1873 acres and the house were sold to another provision dealer, Harvey James, who occupied the house from 1873 to 1907. Mr.
James operated the James and Brackett Provisions Store in Newton Corner.
