Although it was essentially a suburban style, Gothic Revival houses were rare in Newton Corner, This house is one of very few local examples, and displays abundant "inchboard finery". The newly-invented scroll saw, a machine similar to the modern jigsaw, allowed local sawmills and car- tion, including the pointed arches formed by the porch balusters. facade gable is decorated with a three-part trefoil design of applied wood, a medieval representation of the religious trinity. The Haskell residence is a two and one-half structure based on a square plan with a steeply-pitched hip roof. The roofline is punctuated by wall dormers of steep pitch.
A two-sided porch is set beneath a HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Haskell Residence was built on land that was once part of a large estate bounded by Sargent, Park, Franklin and Waverley Streets: The land was owned by George C. Lord, who had made his fortune in the shipping and railroad enterprises and in the insurance business. After 1875 Lord began to sell off his extensive landholdings near the newly fashionable Kenrick Park. Lots were purchased by wealthy Boston merchants and professionals, such as Charles Haskell, a leather dealer. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Atlases: 1907 Mary R.
