White 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The house at 1008 Beacon Street is a notable and representative example of a suburban, architect-designed residence, a type one numerous along Beacon Street as it extends west of the commercial center of the village; the house therefore meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The house at 1008 Beacon Street is is a square plan house designed in the Shingle style with Colonial Revival style overtones. The gable roof of the main block is intersected by an over-scaled gambrel cross-gable clad in patterned cut wood shingles. The focal point of the design is the Syrian- arched entrance porch of coursed, dressed fieldstone.
Other features include oriel windows, a prominent soaring fieldstone chimney and windows of stained and bevelled glass. The frieze is ornamented with applied wooden swags, a favorite decorative motií oi the Colonial Revival period. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This Beacon Street residence is typical of the homes of the emerging upper middle class in Newton during the final years of the nineteenth century. Beacon Street west of Newton Centre was characterized by numerous large, architect-designed homes . The first occupant of this house was Joseph W. Barrows, in 1899. Barrows soon moved to another house on nearby Lake Avenue. The second occupant was Christopher Goddard, a Boston insurance broker, who lived here beginning in 1903.
