Date 2/77: rey. by H.white 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The house at 115-117 Jewett Street is one of Newton's finest examples of an academic version of the domestic Mansard style and therefore meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic - Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Found in all parts of Newton, mansard-roofed houses were most prevalent in areas like Newton Corner which underwent intensive development during the post-Civil war years.
The house at 115-117 Jewett Street features a variation of the common Mansard form with a projecting entrance pavilion; this design has a three-part facade with shallow, Mansard-roofed end paviiions and a recessed center bay. This arrangement was favored in more academic versions of the style. The original detailing, including a modillion cornice, transom over the double entrance doors, and scrolled Victorian era dormers, has been well- preserved. A mansard-roofed carriage house with a cupola stands to the rear of the main house. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house stands on a property that originally extended to Waban Street on the north, and approximately fifty feet further to the south.
It is representative of the wood frame country villas and suburban houses built by Boston commuters and the newly-rich upper middle class. Darius Emerson owned this lot in 1855. Emerson was a dry goods merchant who owned extensive rental property in the northern part of Newton Corner.
