Da te 3/10/81 rev. by H. White 3/86 ITIONAL REGISTER CRITERI: STATEMENT (if applicable) 203 Islington Rd meets Criteria C as a rare surviving example of the Ruskinian mode of the Victorian Gothic style in Newton. Bne veotortana Criterion B is met by the property's association with Ezra Winslow, a prominent local real estate speculator during Auburndale's early suburbanization. In 1874 the property came under the ownership of Royal Pulsifer, an owner of the Boston Herald newspaper. ICHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of ther buildings within the community.
203 Islington Rd was a subsidiary building on a large estate built in 1874 on a promontory overlooking the Charles River which was called Islington Point. The estate was known as "Islington" and the mansion to which 203 Islington Road was a companion has long since been demolished. 203 Islington Rd. is an unusual example of the Ruskinian mode of the Victorian Gothic style as adapted for a smaller dwelling. The building is constructed of a buff-colored composition stone, as is "The 'astle" nearby at 53 Vista Avenue (N.R.H.P. 10/25/79). The Castle was also built by Ezra Winslow. Darker brick is used for belt courses and the windows are set within pointed arches trimmed with voussoirs of alternating colors. The ISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the uilding relates to the development of the community.
This structure is extremely well-preserved and is significant as one of the area's few surviving buildings from the era when large estates occupied Auburndale's picturesque reach of Charles River frontage. 3IBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Atlases: 1874, 1886, 1895, 1907 Directories.
