Because of its association with Thomas Hastings (1671-1737) who was active in local affairs, this structure meets criterion B. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of ither buildings within the community. This is a good example of the highly developed Georgian vernacular tradition.
Built of narrow clapboards, facing north, an uncommon practice, it is symmetrical under its low pitched gable roof. The Iive-bay, 2-story dwelling has a saltbox extension to the rear. door surround is simple but refined: delicate pilasters displaying entasis support a low entabla- ture with a frieze, windows are simply paired, contain 12/12 sash, and on 1on, etalon the 2nd floor are framed into the cornice. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the uilding relates to the development of the community. Thomas Hastings (1671-1737) originally from Watertown, parried Sarah Tarbell of Newton in 1693 and probably built this house at that time.
An active man in town affairs, Thomas served as Surveyor of highways 1716, Hogrieve 1722, and signed a petition to the General Court for a meeting house more accessible to residents of thesouth section of Newton in 1713. In his will dated March 8, 1736, Thomas is described as a husbandman with an estate of a house, barn and 34 acres. The members of his family arelisted as Sarah, wife, Sarah Pond and Mary Dibe married daughters, and David, Josiah and Ebenezer, sons. An inventory taken at the time his death listed the household iyems as well as the farming tools and samest Cichardsosons e bomershipdatge several 7i0es ahi 1874 when Samuel Richardson.
