White 3/86 IATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) 2212 Commonwealth Ave meets üriteria J as one of the city's few remaining board and batten type Gothic Revival houses. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of )ther buildings within the community. This well-preserved residence is Auburndale's only surviving Gothic cottage, and one of few remaining in the city as a whole. Houses, by A.J. Downing. The overall picturesque quality of this small residence is achieved by the use of board and batten siding, a crenellated enclosed porch and wood brackets at the lateral eaves. The ell was added in 1875 and remodelled in 1900 at the time the dormer windows were added.
The house is picturesquely sited on a tree-shaded slope. IISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the uilding relates to the development of the community. As of 1980 this house was owned by a descendant of Nathan Mossman, the owner during the latter part of the 19th century. Mossman was Newton's overseer of the poor.
