White 4/86 IONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The house at 47 Sargent is one of Newton's finest examples of a large, architect-designed Stick Style residence and therefore meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. CHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of ner butldings within the community. The house at 47 Sargent Street demonstrates the Stick Style preference for tall, vertically proportioned forms, steeply- pitched roofs, and sharp, angular gables. The irregular silhouette of the roofline is produced by gables and dormers in a variety of sizes and asymmetrically placed.
The center entrance is flanked by gabled pavilions, and is set within a Tudor-inspired porch with heavy posts and pointed arches. The rich detail of the house includes the leaded glass sidelights of the entrance, patterned shingles and applied wooden stickwork of the walls and the red and black patterned slate roof. The very large carriage house extends the architectural statement of the main house. :STORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the lilding relates to the development of the community. This house and two others on Sargent Street between Park Street and Waverly Avenue were the first built on subdivisions of the estate of George Iord. Iord had amassed a fortune in shipping during the 1840s, and accumulated further wealth in the insurance business and ia tne ha itroad as a director of the Boston & Maine Railroad Company.
