(less than lacra) SettingResidential/Commercial neighborhood on busy main street; corner lot at Watertown St & Broadway Recorded by Kathlyn Hatch Organization Newton Historical Comm. Date December 1976 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) As a well-detailed example of Colonial Revival architecture in Newton, this residence meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other bufldings within the community. This residence, completed in the late 1890s, is representative of the best aspects of late 19th-century Colonial Revival style design. Typical of this period are the bellcast hip roof with dormers, boxy massing, symmetrical arrangement of the openings and two-level front bow windows.
The classical detailing, which is more elaborate than in other nearby examples, includes Ionic corner pilasters, an entablature with enriched moldings, and a Palladian motif in the front dormer. Since its construction, the exterior of the residence has survived with little alteration except for some changes to the front porch. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the butlding relates to the development of the community. Water Dept. records indicate that the house was first connected to the city water supply in April 1897, and the structure was probably completed not long after. The first owner of the house was Morgan Mahoney (1842?-1920), a Nonantum grocer, who continued to live there through his death in 1920. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES - Atlases 1907, 1895.
