Date 2/77: rev. by H.White NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The house at 81-83 Gardner Street is an excellent example of a small, end-gabled workers! cottage which appeared in Newton by. the 1830s and continued to built for several decades after the Civil War. Therefore it meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The house at 81-83 Gardner Street is a well-preserved early worker's cottage. This house type is found in other Boston area communities, such as Cambridge and in early industrial villages throughout southern New England, but Newton Corner has a relatively large number of examples as does the village of Nonantum.
This house is located in a cluster or early workers housing in the Gardner and School Streets neighborhood. The absence of ornamental detailing is typical of modest workers' housing. This structure is a side-entered double house, with its gable end to the street. It is typical of the small, plain, inexpensive yet soundly built cottages that prevailed during the second half of the nineteenth eentury. A pair of windows lights the upper bedroom level of the house, with its kneewall construction. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development' of the community. Modest 1t-story cottages such as this one were associated for the most part with the Irish workmen who moved to Newton Corner just prior to the civil war. Thomas Dunn, a gardner, resided in this house until ca. 1900.
