White 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) Because of its associations with the Hyde family, which had lived in the Newton Corner area since the seventeenth century. the Hyde House meets Criterion B of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Sections of the Hyde House are thought to date from the seventeenth century. The original house was destroyed by fire - 1709 and is known been immediately rebuilt. Numerous additions and alterations have been made over the years. Sometime before 1792 the house was expanded , and a second addition was made in 1823. In 1865 a library was added.
The house was moved from Centre Street to its present location in 1909. In its present form it is a Greek Revival sidehall house of two and one-half stories with its gable end to the street. entrance is flanked by full-length sidelights and is offset to the left. A two-sided Doric portico encircles the lower story. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Deacon Samuel Hyde, who is thought to have built this house in its original form, was one of Newton's first few original white settlers. He arrived in this country from London in 1639, and may have been accompanied by his wife. With his brother (who owned adjoining land)in 1667 he laid out a road through his acreage which later became known as Centre Street. The Street today remains one of the city's major north-south thoroughfares.
The Hyde farm originally consisted of 43 acres. The farmstead remained in the possession of the Hyde family for eight generations. A nursery which flourished on the property during the nineteenth century Îa said to have had its beginnings in a pocket of cherry stones planted by Capt. Samuel Hyde, who by 1855 was a member of the 6th generation of the Hyde family to reside in Newton Corner. Capt. Hyde was also a bank director and a director of the Newton Female Academy. George Hyde (1811-1892) was a selectman, assessor and president of the Newton Savings Bank. He expanded the family nursery, but by the end of the 19th century increasing land values resulted from the suburbanization of Newton Corner. This led George Hyde to sell of most of his land as the practicality 2 of agricultural use diminished.
